
| On 11th December 2006, Women's Emancipation and Development Trust (WED Trust) with the collaboration of Muram Women Federation, Chellampatti Block, and All India Democratic Women Association of Madurai Rural organized 'Dharna' in front of Panchayath Union Office at Chellampatti under Madurai District.
More than 400 women from 35 villages assembled and shouted slogans demanding various women rights. In her presidential address, Ms. Nallamayan Logamani of WED Trust stressed 'Women's Rights are Human Rights'. Ms Sundaravalli, Ms Velammal and Ms Muthurani of the All India Democratic Women Association delivered eloquent lectures on present women issues and demanded the State Government to intervene immediately.
All press media has covered the programme well and published it in their newspaper widely. The programme is published through television worldwide on the same day evening through the Sun News.
Followed by the Dharna / Demonstration, a team of 10 women leaders submitted a memorandum of petition to the Deputy Collector at Usilampatti pressing the following points: i) Bill should be passed to allow at least 33% seats for women at Assembly and Parliament ii) Appoint Committees to strictly Implement the Women Property Rights Act iii) Implement the Act pertaining 100 days work at Madurai district iv) Give wide publicity /awareness on the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act 2005. v) Remove the machinery, depleting the labour employment in Agriculture.
