New Networker Information Layout on Website We have changed the presentation of Networker information under Get Involved on the website in two ways 1. We have improved how the profile information is shown once you have clicked on a Networker's name 2. We also show our latest joiners first as we think that will be of more interest than an alphabetical list. Do send us your comments on these changes or any others you would like to suggest.
New GLI Networkers
More than 40 new networkers from 12 different countries have joined us since our last News Mail, and we welcomed our first networker from Romania. We now have more than 530 networkers from 46 countries with India (particularly from Tamil Nadu) and China leading the way. As we have said before, every Networker is equally important to GLI and it is now easier to see who has most recently joined us and to click on their names to read their profiles. Here is a selection of what some of the newest Networkers say about themselves, and once again this reflects the great and healthy diversity of interest in caring about making this world a better place for others which GLI's networkers show and clearly feel. It makes us very proud. Phupheli Vacks, South Africa I am a TV producer in South Africa, doing some work for the SABC. My specific interests are on youth development and social entrepreneurial projects. S Jayalakshmi Selvaraj, Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, India I am working in our district since 1990 for rural women and children. The Mahalir Trust is organising womens groups for their empowerment, promoting education and health services for rural poor children and improving economic status of poor women by income generation ctivities. Lara Penin, Italy Researcher on design for sustainable social innovation. Brazil is my home country but I am presently at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. Ezio Manzini, Italy Professor of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is Director of Unit of Research Design and Innovation for Sustainability. Shreeram Devkoti, Nepal Volunteer work in Nepal. Facenepal offers a range of volunteer programmes. Steve Koon, China (our 500th Networker to register!) I am starting a network of university based social enterprise incubators A Sarojammal, Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India People's Organisation for Welfare and Education In Rural (POWER) was started in 1994 by a few committed youths who have dedicated their lives toward the overall development of the rural poor and needy. They are organising the women into solidarity groups and providing basic education to enable them to work out their own liberation. The range of actions include SHGs, farmer orientation, tree plantation programmes and medical help. Thomas Abbott, Beijing, China Care for Children exists to relieve hardship, distress and sickness in abandoned and orphaned children in China by the introduction of strategic initiatives in childcare practice, at the request of, and in cooperation with, the Chinese national and local authorities. Karunamoorthy Karmegam, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India The Ghandian Welfare and Development Society has promoted 1790 SHGs, 255 mens SHGs and 15 special SHGs for people with disabilities. It promotes savings, credit linkages, income generation, skills training and upgrading, milk cows and dairy development, total sanitation programmes, training in rexin bags, computer skills and handworks for rural women and girls. Kudzo Agbeve, Eastern Region, Ghana Forces of Light is a registered NGO promoting quality of life and the dignity of poor, rural and the mountain people of Ghana. Rajesh Pandey, New Delhi, India India World Foundation is a registered institution to Serve Global Society John Williams, Gingee, Tamil Nadu, India Community Action for Rural Development Society's (CARDS) development activities are cantered around the downtrodden and oppressed people in backward villages. We seek an egalitarian just social order where the oppressed find equal opportunities for development, to voice their rights and can act to achieve this. Our Principal Objective (from a wide range of activities listed in the full profile) is empowerment of the deprived and disadvantaged people from self-reliance through non-formal and continuing education. Ian Clyne, Inverness, Scotland, UK Four years ago a remarkable process began at Inverness High School. A group of pupils, teachers, business and social sector people decided that REAL transformation was possible; transformation that would change the shape of the High School and begin to impact on the wider community on the west side of the River Ness from which the school draws its pupils. The REAL vision brings life-long learning, voluntary work and social enterprise alongside each other on the school campus in an exciting way. (Do read more in both Ian's profile and in the story in the Inspire area under the UK country selection or the Education and Training category. There is so much to learn from it. REAL Organics could surely be replicated elsewhere.) Zhang Feng, China China Programme Manager for the Foreign Policy Centre Zadiah Eisenberg, Romania We aim to enable underprivileged children to rejoin or remain in the education system and to access better opportunities for their future. Childhood is short. It is a time when children learn most easily and are most receptive to help. Education is the only thing that can bring these children into a different world and give them choice. Asociatia Atelier Sacelean helps educate children who have missed out on education opportunities, because education is every child's right. Karuppasamy Sksamy, Tuticorn, Tamil Nadu, India SCSA (Southern Collective for Strategic Action) is a registered NGO's network team working in the fields of Community Development, Womens Development, Health related activities, Human Rights activities and Welfare Programmes. A Group of 30 NGOs, belonging to the Southern part of Tamil Nadu, which is known for all sorts of socio-economic backwardness, share resources, having recognised the weaknesses and limitations of operating in isolation. The present group of NGOs strongly believe that the collective strength could be the only means to resist any sort of threat of politicking, not only among dalits, but also from the NGOs themselves. Sudip Peterson, USA I am a USC graduate student. I am interested in gathering as much information as possible on the global network in order to positively strengthen my communities. Clive Wright, Singapore The company is a media concept development company working in the area of social cause-related communications. Our Flagship Project is the ECO 4 the World family of TV Series designed in partnership with UNEP. A Muralidhar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India The Panchavati Rural Development Society works in the field of Environment Education in schools, Micro Credit assistance and e-literacy education.
