Ms. Anne Smart, African Regional Coordinator, visited project sites of two founding organizations of the WANGO Ghana chapter: the Obra Foundation's school projects near Adeiso, in the West Akim District; and the Child Educational Assistance Project's (CEAP) citrus tree planting project in the farming area of Adawso, in the Eastern Region of Ghana, outside the capital of Accra.
Since its beginnings in 1998, the Obra Foundation is committed to the development of deprived rural communities through the promotion of quality education and good health especially for women and children, including HIV/AIDs awareness programs using the ABC approach (abstinence, being faithful, condom use), as well as dealing with environmental issues.
Under the dedicated leadership of its Executive Director (GLI Networker), James Boamah Mensah, the Obra Foundation partnered with the Japanese Embassy receiving the Japanese Ambassador Grassroots Grant; and the American Ambassador Self Help Assistance Program through the US Embassy in successive projects resulting in the creation of two buildings of six classroom blocks, one for a Primary School, and another for a Junior Secondary School respectively.
The projects of the Obra Foundation and the Child Educational Assistance Project reveal the resourcefulness and commitment to service of Ghana NGOs. By learning from successful models such as these, and by networking among organizations in general, sharing resources and ideas, new approaches to solving problems can be generated and implemented. This is the hope of WANGO International, and now also, of WANGO Ghana.
